John McCain in January 2003:
“But the point is that, one, we will win this conflict. We will win it easily.”
But later:
Over the years, McCain has often claimed that he never made rosy predictions, saying in 2006 that he “fully understood from the beginning” that Iraq “would be a very, very difficult undertaking.”
So why should I trust McCain's judgment when it comes to the surge? Republicans have claimed again and again that "we've turned a corner" in Iraq, but over 20 US soldiers continue to die a month, billions of our tax dollars continue to be spent despite an enormous deficit, and there's increased aerial destruction:
Statistics tell the story: Air Force and Navy aircraft dropped 437 bombs and missiles in Iraq in the first six months of 2007, a fivefold increase over the 86 used in the first half of 2006, and three times more than in the second half of 2006, according to Air Force data. In June, bombs dropped at a rate of more than five a day
